Variability in noise-masked consonant identification

چکیده
Speech communication commonly occurs in the presence of noise. Perceptual errors in the perception of noise-masked speech vary as a function of noise type (e.g., white noise, speech-shaped noise, multi-talker babble), listener characteristics (e.g., listeners with hearing loss, non-native listeners), and target stimulus properties (e.g., native language of the talker, casual vs clear speech). There is evidence of talker-specific effects in multitalker-babble-masked sentence intelligibility as well as token-specific effects in speech-shaped-noisemasked CV syllables. The present work analyzes talkerand token-level variation in the identification of a large number of tokens of four consonant categories [t], [d], [s], [z] produced by 20 talkers and masked by multi-talker babble. A fitted multilevel logistic regression model illustrates variation in intelligibility between talkers and with respect to within-talker (between-token) variation. The results are discussed in relation to landmark theory and the glimpsing model of speech-in-noise perception.

ACOUSTICS2008/2512 Identification of intervocalic consonants in stationary and nonstationary noise
The factors which underlie the perception of consonants in noise remain poorly understood. In this study, native listeners identified 24 English consonants spoken by 8 talkers presented in 9 intervocalic contexts with varying stress position. Listeners were tested in 5 noise conditions: tokens were masked by stationary speechshaped noise, a competing talker, 3 and 8 speaker babble and speech-mo...

Identification of place of articulation in the synthesized syllables /bi/, /di/, and /gi/ was examined in three groups of listeners: (a) normal hearers, (b) subjects with high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss, and (c) normally hearing subjects listening in noise. Stimuli with an appropriate second formant (F2) transition (moving-F2 stimuli) were compared with stimuli in which F2 was constan...
متن کاملAided and Unaided Speech Perception by Older Hearing Impaired Listeners
The most common complaint of older hearing impaired (OHI) listeners is difficulty understanding speech in the presence of noise. However, tests of consonant-identification and sentence reception threshold (SeRT) provide different perspectives on the magnitude of impairment. Here we quantified speech perception difficulties in 24 OHI listeners in unaided and aided conditions by analyzing (1) con...
متن کاملL2 consonant identification in noise: cross-language comparisons
The difficulty of listening to speech in noise is exacerbated when the speech is in the listener’s L2 rather than L1. In this study, Spanish and Dutch users of English as an L2 identified American English consonants in a constant intervocalic context. Their performance was compared with that of L1 (British English) listeners, under quiet conditions and when the speech was masked by speech from ...

The classic [MN55] confusion matrix experiment (16 consonants, white noise masker) was repeated by using computerized procedures, similar to those of Phatak and Allen (2007). The consonant scores in white noise can be categorized in three sets: low-error set [/m/, /n/], average-error set [/p/, /t/, ...
